Dog lovers meet Delhi Mayor over SC’s order on stray dogs Latest News
Dog and animal lovers on Wednesday met Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh to express concerns regarding the Supreme Court’s order on stray dogs in the Delhi NCR region.
Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh said he welcomes the top court’s order and will implement the order 100%. However, he noted that the order will be implemented phase-wise, as per the demands of animal rights activists and dog lovers. Therefore, he said, in the first phase, all ferocious and ill dogs will be taken care of.
Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, speaking to ANI during the meeting, said, “People from different parts of Delhi have come to meet me. They are concerned and want to understand how the order will be implemented, as they are pet lovers. I told them that just like any of them, we are equally pet lovers. We will keep the dogs in the same way we have kept our pets in our house.”
Iqbal Singh noted that the pet lovers are also concerned about ferocious dogs and those that bite.
He continued, “So, they demanded that they want us to implement the order phase-wise. And in the first phase, instead of removing all the dogs, only those dogs that have received complaints will be removed or ones that are furious and bite. They are also concerned about such dogs and wanted such dogs to be managed first, and that they should be sent to correction centres, shelter homes.”
Iqbal Singh said he agreed to their demands and wants dog lovers to come and serve in correction centres. “They are ready for it”, he added.
He further said that the animal’s lovers will inform the authorities about the dogs that are a safety concern to the public. Adding, “Overall, the people of Delhi are ready to correct the stray dogs. In the first phase, we will remove only those dogs that are sick or furious, that are biting, and next we will pick the normal stray dogs..."
A dog/animal love,r after the meeting, speaking to the media said, "We were worried that after the Supreme Court order, a lot of dogs are already being picked up, and where are they being taken, what will be done with them. Because Delhi does not have the capacity to keep 7 lakh street dogs in one place in good humane conditions. MCD also knows this.”
“We have got such a good assurance from the Mayor that he also wants to implement the order in a better way, along with all the citizens. We want every living being, whether it is human or animal, to live and let live.” “In the first phase, those dogs will be picked up who are aggressive, bite or whose behaviour needs improvement..." she added.
