Dr Manmohan Singh is reportedly not keen on accepting Punjab Congress’s request

Despite fervent requests made by the Punjab Congress to Dr Manmohan Singh, to contest election in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, the former PM has so far not responded positively. Dr Manmohan Singh has not been offered this for the first time. He was asked to contest elections by his party in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls too, which he had declined on account of ill health.

He has never won a Lok Sabha election in his entire political career and has been a Raj Sabha member since 1991 from Assam. His current Raj Sabha term ends on June 14. To get him re-elected to the House, the Congress would need help and support of parties like All India United Democratic Front, as it does not have enough numbers in the state to ensure Singh’s nomination.
