10 held for robbery of gold jewellery worth Rs 37 lakh

Mumbai: Ten persons were arrested in connection with the alleged robbery of gold ornaments worth Rs 37 lakh from a jewellery manufacturing unit at Zaveri Bazaar in South Mumbai, police said today.

Police arrested the ten accused within 30 hours of the incident and recovered around 890 grams of gold worth Rs 26.70 lakh from them, a senior official said.


The incident took place late night on November 8 at the gold ornaments manufacturing unit owned by Asit Rampad Mandal at Sutar Chawl in Zaveri Bazaar.

"At least seven persons stormed into the unit with weapons like pistol and knives and threatened 10 employees, who were working there at that time. The accused then tied their hands, legs and also gagged them with adhesive tapes and later decamped with the gold ornaments," Dnyaneshwar Chavan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-2) said.

A case of robbery was registered at Lokmanya Tilak Marg Police Station and an investigation was launched. Crime Branch unit-2 also started parallel probe into the case, he said.

Police got a tip-off that one of the accused in the case stays at Kurla Nehrunagar, after which a raid was conducted at his house and he was detained. Six others were arrested after that, he added.

Meanwhile, Unit -2 of the crime branch also arrested three accused in this connection, taking the total number of arrests to ten.

All the accused were produced before court, which sent them to police custody till November 17, Sharad Naik, Senior Police Inspector of Lokmanya Tilak Marg Police Station said. A probe is underway.
