After Delhi, Haryana Witnesses Rapid Increase in Crimes, NCRB Data Highlights Concerns Over Safety

Haryana Latest News: In a worrisome revelation, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report for the year 2022 indicates a significant rise in criminal incidents in Haryana, particularly crimes against women. The data raises concerns about the safety of residents, showcasing an unsettling 17.6 percent increase in criminal cases, totaling 2.43 lakh cases in the state.

Haryana has witnessed a surge in robbery incidents surpassing both Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, reflecting a concerning trend in criminal activities. Abduction cases have also witnessed an alarming increase, painting a grim picture of the law and order situation in the state.

According to the NCRB report, Haryana, after Delhi, holds the unfortunate distinction of having the second-highest number of crimes against women in the country. The crime rate against women per lakh population in Haryana stands at 118.7 percent, slightly lower than Delhi's 144.4 percent. The comprehensive report indicates an overall deterioration in the law and order situation in Haryana, with an increase in various types of crimes.

In 2022, the crime rate in Haryana reached 118.7 percent, accompanied by a 17.6 percent surge in criminal incidents per lakh population. Disturbingly, cases of crimes against children also witnessed a 7.7 percent increase. Notably, the charge sheet filing rate in cases of crimes against women in Haryana stands at a concerning 57.2 percent, indicating a considerable backlog in legal proceedings.

Haryana ranks third from the bottom in the country in terms of filing charge sheets, following Rajasthan (54 percent) and Assam (41.4 percent). The report further highlights a mere 41.6 percent charge sheet filing rate in cases related to crimes against children. In this category, Punjab leads with a significantly higher rate of 72.6 percent.

The report details that 1,272 cases of sexual abuse of girls were registered, with a one percent increase in cases of crimes against children and the elderly. In 2022, the state recorded 16,742 cases of criminal incidents against women, marking a 0.5 percent increase from the previous year. The average daily reporting of five cases of rape emphasizes the urgent need for enhanced safety measures.

Home Minister Anil Vij responded to the report, stating that efforts are being made to control crime, and the state has witnessed a decrease in murders. He emphasized the significant improvement in the ease of filing FIRs, with approximately 100 FIRs being filed daily.

In response, opposition leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda criticized the government, citing the NCRB data as evidence that women are not safe under the BJP-JJP regime. Hooda highlighted the government's failure in protecting citizens and expressed concern over increasing cases of sexual harassment.

Abhay Singh Chautala, principal general secretary INILO, criticized the coalition government, stating that the claims of good governance have been exposed by the NCRB data. He raised concerns over corruption, low prosecution rates, and the rising issue of drug addiction in the state.
