CPIM Demands Rs 26,000 Minimum Wage, 200 MANREGA Workdays; AICCTU, BJD Slam BJP Latest News:

Bhubaneswar, Odisha – The All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU), CPIM and several other labour organisations joined the nationwide Bharat Bandh on Wednesday, in response to a call by a joint platform of 10 central trade unions and their federations. The protest is against the central government's “anti-labour, anti-farmer, and anti-people” policies.

Speaking at the protest site, Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPIM] leader Suresh Chandra Panigrahy told ANI, “This will be another historic strike — the 23rd general strike in India since the implementation of the new liberal policies over the past 32 years. The BJP government has converted 29 labour laws into four labour codes under the pretext of ease of doing business.”

Panigrahy demanded a minimum wage of Rs 26,000 per month for all categories of workers.
“Under MANREGA, we demand 200 working days per year and a daily wage of Rupees 600. The government is selling off public sector undertakings under the National Monetization Pipeline, and is acting in favour of big corporates like Ambani and Adani,” he alleged.
He also demanded that the government fill all existing vacancies, create new jobs, and control the prices of essential commodities.

AICCTU General Secretary Mahendra Parida, also present at the protest, said, “We submitted our demands to the Modi government, but they refused to act. That’s why around 30 crore workers across India are protesting today. The BJP government is creating a corporate-driven slavery system. Workers are being restricted from striking, forced to give prior notice, and are being denied bonuses. Privatisation must be stopped.”

BJD MLA Prafulla Samal also extended support to the protest, stating, “The BJD’s labour wing not only supports the strike but has also contributed to its success. The central and state governments have failed to address workers’ issues. Labour laws have been diluted — from 44 original labour laws to just 4 labour codes — benefitting only employers.”

The protest led to disruption of essential services across many states as workers from various sectors participated in the strike.
