PM Modi Extends Warm Wishes to Dalai Lama on his Birthday: “Strive not only for physical progress but for a peaceful mind and a kind heart—extending compassion not just to those close to you, but to all,” said His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, who turned 90 on July 6. The Tibetan spiritual leader marked the milestone by issuing a heartfelt message focused on compassion, peace, and altruism.
Ahead of his birthday, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate reaffirmed that the generations-old Dalai Lama institution would continue, following persistent requests from his devotees worldwide over the past 14 years. He also clarified that only the Gaden Phodrang Trust holds the sole authority to recognize his future reincarnation and that no other entity has the right to interfere in the matter.
Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju expressed his support for the Dalai Lama’s decision. Following Rijiju’s remarks, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We have seen reports relating to the statement made by His Holiness the Dalai Lama about the continuation of the Dalai Lama institution. The Government of India does not take any position or speak on matters concerning beliefs and practices of faith and religion. The Government has always upheld freedom of religion for all in India and will continue to do so.”
In his birthday statement, His Holiness humbly described himself as “a simple Buddhist monk” who does not usually engage in birthday celebrations. He thanked his followers for dedicating the day to meaningful acts of compassion and service.
“On the occasion of my 90th birthday, I understand that well-wishers and friends in many places, including Tibetan communities, are gathering for celebrations. I particularly appreciate the fact that many of you are using the occasion to engage in initiatives that highlight the importance of compassion, warm-heartedness, and altruism,” he said.

He emphasized the importance of cultivating peace of mind along with material development. “While it is important to work for material development, it is vital to focus on achieving peace of mind through cultivating a good heart and by being compassionate—not just toward near and dear ones, but toward everyone. Through this, you will contribute to making the world a better place.”
Reaffirming his lifelong mission, the Dalai Lama said he will continue focusing on his core commitments: promoting human values, encouraging interfaith harmony, spreading ancient Indian wisdom on the mind and emotions, and preserving Tibetan culture and heritage. He believes Tibetan knowledge can make a meaningful global contribution through its emphasis on peace and compassion.
“I develop determination and courage in my daily life through the teachings of the Buddha and Indian masters such as Shantideva, whose following aspiration I strive to uphold.
‘As long as space endures,
As long as sentient beings remain,
Until then, may I too remain
To dispel the miseries of the world.’”

He concluded his message with gratitude: “Thank you for using the opportunity of my birthday to cultivate peace of mind and compassion. Tashi Delek and with prayers.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his wishes on social media. In a post on X, PM Modi wrote, “I join 1.4 billion Indians in extending our warmest wishes to His Holiness the Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday. He has been an enduring symbol of love, compassion, patience and moral discipline. His message has inspired respect and admiration across all faiths. We pray for his continued good health and long life.”
