Chandigarh Weather Update today: Heatwave, Thunderstorm, and lightning Alerts Issued

Chandigarh has seen a significant increase in power demand due to the extensive use of air conditioners and desert coolers.

Chandigarh Weather Update today: The India Meteorological Department said that Tricity can expect some relief on Wednesday from the prolonged heatwave conditions in the city as the approaching western disturbances may bring light rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, ranging from 30-40 kmph.

MeT officials stated that there is a chance that rain can bring a little drop to the maximum temperature. Still, the minimum temperature will likely remain unaffected, and dry weather will resume from Thursday.

Severe heatwave conditions were observed in Chandigarh and at the airport observatory on Tuesday. The maximum temperature in Chandigarh decreased to 43.9°C from 44.5°C, which was still seven degrees above the average temperature. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature at the airport observatory was even worse, i.e., 7.3 degrees above normal. At Mohali, the maximum temperature was 44°C; at Panchkula, it was 43°C. Warm night conditions were also continued in some parts of the city.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for June 19, indicating that the conditions are tolerable for normal people but pose a moderate health risk to vulnerable sections, i.e., infants, the elderly, and people with chronic diseases.

The rise in power demand:

As temperatures rise, Chandigarh has seen a significant increase in power demand due to the extensive use of air conditioners and desert coolers. On Tuesday, the peak power demand surged to 446 MW, up from 427 MW on Monday. The city receives a daily power supply of 500 MW. Last Thursday, an all-time high demand of 449 MW was recorded. The increased demand has led to complaints of unscheduled power outages, particularly in peripheral areas. A department official stated that there were no planned power cuts, but outages might occur due to sudden faults caused by the heightened power demand in certain areas. He explained that power cuts are imposed in affected areas to facilitate repair work.
