Chandigarh Secures 2nd Rank in Super Swachhata League Latest News:
Chandigarh has secured 2nd rank in the 3–10 lakh population category under the Super Swachhata League, a special category of the Swachh Survekshan 2024 rankings. The city was honoured in the presence of the President of India during the award ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on July 17.
A delegation led by Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla, along with 10 key officials and sanitation champions, represented the city at the event.
The Super Swachhata League was introduced in Swachh Survekshan 2024 by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) to recognise cities that have demonstrated extraordinary and sustained performance in sanitation and urban cleanliness.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, the league includes cities that have ranked in the top three at least once in the past three years and are also among the top 20 cities in their population category in the current assessment.
“Chandigarh continues to set benchmarks in urban sanitation, reaffirming its status as one of India’s cleanest and most sustainable cities. This recognition is a testament to the city’s consistent top-tier performance in cleanliness and sanitation under the Swachh Bharat Mission,” Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla had said earlier.
Meanwhile, neighbouring cities Mohali and Panchkula were not invited to this year’s Swachh Survekshan award ceremony.
As per the Hindustan Times report, in 2023, Mohali secured the 82nd rank among cities with over 1 lakh population while Panchkula ranked 139th in the same category in 2023.
The Swachh Survekshan is the world’s largest urban cleanliness and sanitation survey, conducted annually by MoHUA under the Swachh Bharat Urban Mission since 2016.
