Tri-City Metro Project Gains Momentum: Key Meeting Scheduled Today to Discuss Scenario Analysis Report
Tri-City Metro Project Gains Momentum latest news: The long-awaited Tri-City Metro project, aimed at easing traffic congestion in Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula, is back in the spotlight as top officials from Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana are set to meet today on June 17, 2025 to discuss the scenario analysis report prepared for the rapid transit system.
The meeting marks the latest development in a project that has seen several ups and downs over more than a decade.
The journey of the Tri-City Metro project began on August 16, 2012, when the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) to then Punjab Governor-cum-Chandigarh Administrator Shivraj Vishwanath Patil.
Later, on July 9, 2015, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the three stakeholders, and a special purpose vehicle (SPV) — the Greater Chandigarh Transport Corporation (GCTC) — was created. With an initial equity of rupees 100 crore, the funding was to be equally contributed by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Chandigarh Administration, and the governments of Punjab and Haryana.
However, in 2017, the project was scrapped due to concerns over its viability. Experts had claimed that a rapid transit system in the region would not be feasible at least until 2051.
The project saw a revival in November 2022, when RITES was tasked with re-planning the metro proposal, considering the region’s growing population of nearly 3 million and increasing traffic congestion.
In March 2023, a revised proposal was submitted, suggesting an 85.65-km metro network spanning three corridors across Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula. The Centre gave in-principle approval to this proposal.
Subsequently, in July 2023, Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana, along with RITES, gave the green light to move forward based on the revised detailed project plan.
A joint committee was formed in November 2024 to evaluate the project's feasibility, marking a collaborative push toward realization.
Now, with the scenario analysis report ready, today's meeting is expected to be a crucial step in determining the next course of action. The report will likely guide investment, construction planning, and timeline estimations for the metro system that could transform commuting in the Tri-City region.
