Pilot Fatigue Risk Flagged: DGCA’s Extended Flight Hours for Air India Raise Safety Concerns

Concerns over aviation safety have intensified after India’s pilot body raised objections to extended flying hours approved for long-haul operations amid ongoing geopolitical disruptions.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation recently granted temporary relaxations allowing Air India to increase flight duration limits to 11 hours 30 minutes and flight duty periods to 11 hours 45 minutes. These changes, effective until April 30, are aimed at helping airlines navigate longer routes caused by airspace restrictions linked to the West Asia crisis.

However, the Airline Pilots Association of India has cautioned that the move could elevate fatigue levels among pilots, potentially affecting safety. In its communication to the regulator, the association argued that while operational challenges are understandable, extending duty hours without adequate safeguards could pose risks.

The pilots’ body also highlighted concerns specific to Boeing 787 aircraft, noting that issues such as non-reclining seats had not been part of prior consultations.

In addition, the association has sought measures like war-risk insurance for crew and passengers, given the volatile situation in the region.

The developments underline the growing tension between operational flexibility and safety oversight in India’s aviation sector.
