Faridkot: With the implementation of GST, the transport sector appears to be at the receiving end. More than 5,000 trucks have come to a halt, it has been learnt. Blaming it on GST, truckers have complained of a major drop in supply orders, resulting in business taking a big hit.
“A majority of our trucks which should be on the roads executing transport orders are now lying parked in Transport Nagar or elsewhere due to lack of orders,” said Subhash Kaushik, general secretary of the All Faridabad Transporters Association.
Describing it as GST effect, he said calls from suppliers to execute orders had come down sharply since the new tax regime came into force. Between 60 per cent and 70 per cent of transport vehicles in the city had no work, making owners and drivers park their trucks, he said.
Kaushik said there were around 1,000 transporters in the district, a majority of whom had been feeling the pinch caused by GST implementation. Supporting the claim, Navin Malhotra, a leading transporter, said more than 50 per cent of his fleet had come to a halt during the past about 10 days.
He said many of the suppliers did not have GST registration while several others had no knowledge of the GST mechanism. He said the suppliers had stopped placing orders to avoid any problem during or after transportation. He said business was likely to remain as low as 25 per cent or less this month. He pointed out that the sector, which was already struggling to recover from the impact of demonetisation, had been badly hit once again.
