Punjab '95 Release Latest News Today, Diljit Dosanjh Controversial Film Postponed: The much-anticipated release of Punjab ‘95, starring Diljit Dosanjh, has been postponed yet again, despite earlier plans for an international release without cuts on February 7, 2025. This biographical film, based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, has been embroiled in controversy and delayed for years due to significant hurdles, primarily involving the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Diljit Dosanjh addressed the setback via Instagram on January 20, stating, "We are sorry and it pains us to inform you that Punjab ‘95 will not release on 7th Feb due to circumstances beyond our control.” The ongoing delays stem from the CBFC's request for nearly 120 cuts to the film, which delves into the alleged extrajudicial killings of Sikh youth by the Punjab Police during the 1990s.
The film's trailer, which garnered over 300,000 views within 20 hours of its release, was abruptly removed from YouTube in India, adding fuel to the controversy. Viewers attempting to access the trailer in the country were met with a message stating it was unavailable, highlighting the escalating censorship issues.
Adding to the complexity, Paramjit Kaur Khalra, the widow of Jaswant Singh Khalra, has strongly opposed the CBFC's demands for edits, asserting that the film should remain unchanged to preserve the authenticity of her husband’s story. The biopic portrays Khalra’s relentless fight to uncover the truth about the disappearances and extrajudicial killings in Punjab, as well as his eventual abduction and murder in 1995—topics that have struck a sensitive chord with authorities.
