Who was Jaswant Singh Khalra? The Man Behind the Story
Jaswant Singh Khalra was a brave human rights activist who exposed the alleged extrajudicial killings of thousands of Sikh youth during the insurgency in Punjab. Khalra, hailing from a family of activists, led investigations that revealed the Punjab police had abducted, killed, and cremated over 25,000 Sikhs without maintaining any records.
He also claimed that around 2,000 police officers were killed for refusing to cooperate with the state’s actions. Khalra mysteriously disappeared in 1995 and was last seen in Amritsar. Almost a decade later, after a prolonged CBI investigation, six police officers were convicted for his murder.
Challenges for Punjab 95
Directed by Honey Trehan, Punjab 95 initially faced opposition from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film, originally titled Ghallughara, underwent multiple cuts and modifications, with the CBFC citing concerns about the potential to incite violence and damage India's foreign relations.
The filmmakers petitioned the Bombay High Court, but the verdict remains pending. Despite the controversy, the film was issued an A-certificate with 21 cuts. The story, which shines a light on Khalra’s efforts to expose injustices, continues to face delays in its release. However, the CBFC has once again asked the makers to make 120 cuts to get a green flag.
