Khelo India Youth Games 2024 Team Punjab win big in gatka events

Punjab bagged four gold, two silver, and three bronze medals.

Khelo India Youth Games 2024, Gatka Events: Team Punjab showed a dominant performance as they bagged four gold, two silver, and three bronze medals in the Gatka event during the Khelo India Youth Games 2024, held in Madurai on Tuesday. On the other hand, Delhi and Chandigarh secured two gold medals each in other gatka categories on Tuesday.

As part of the Khelo India Youth Games 2024, the gatka events, a traditional martial arts form, were held at the Madurai SDAT complex between January 21 and 23. The gatka events had six categories, including farri soti team events, Farri soti individual, and single soti individual events. Athletes from 19 states, including Tamil Nadu and reigning champions Punjab, took part in the competition.

On Tuesday, the semifinal and final matches were held with a dominating Punjab girls' team defeating Delhi in the Farri Soti team event and emerging as the champions. Similarly, the Punjab boys' team also defeated Delhi in the Farri Soti team to win the finals. On the other hand, Punjab’s Gursewak Singh defeated Delhi’s Harjasdeep Singh. 

The fourth match — the individual soti event — for girls ended in a tie. Now, a 60-second tiebreaker was held to find out the winner when Punjab’s Prabhkiran Kaur defeated Ramandeep Kaur from Chhattisgarh to bag the gold medal.

Later, Delhi’s Jasmeet Kaur bagged gold as she defeated Gagandeep Kaur from Punjab in the individual farri soti event. Moreover, Chandigarh won the gold medal as the match ended with the opposition Punjab player getting a red card for a technical foul in an individual farri soti.

As the event concluded, Punjab bagged four gold, two silver, and three bronze medals, while the Delhi team won only one gold, three silver, and two bronze medals. Chandigarh secured one gold, one silver, and three bronze medals while Haryana secured two bronze medals. Likewise, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Himachal Pradesh secured one bronze medal each.
