Neeraj stands first with 1455 marks in the Rankings
New Delhi: Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Neeraj Chopra has become the world's number one javelin thrower. He is the first athlete of the country to achieve this feat. The World Athletics Federation released the rankings on Monday. Neeraj stands first with 1455 marks. He is 22 points ahead world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada.
Arshad Nadeem, the thrower of the neighboring country Pakistan, finished fifth in the ranking. Nadeem won a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games. Neeraj Chopra could not participate in Commonwealth due to injury. Along with this, India's Rohit Yadav is included in the top-20 with 15th and DP Manu 17th place.
Neeraj was ranked second in the world as of 30 August 2022. Peters was still the number one javelin thrower. Along with this, Neeraj won the gold medal by throwing the javelin at a distance of 88.67 meters in the Diamond League held in Doha on May 5 this month. The world's number one player Anderson Peters finished third with a throw of 85.88 meters. Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Jakub Vadlejch finished second.
Indian javelin throwers are also the defending champions of the Asian Games. Neeraj bagged the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia. He would like to defend his title in the Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8 this year. Neeraj had won a silver medal at the Eugene World Athletics Championships in America last year.
