MS Dhoni is the only Indian cricketer to have three ICC trophies in his cabinet.
MS Dhoni Latest News: Number 7 is considered one of the luckiest numbers in numerology. It is probably right as Jersey number 7 turned out to be the luckiest one for the Indian cricket team. Well, it was more than luck. It was MS Dhoni. Born on July 7, 1981, MS Dhoni chose his jersey number as 7 only. He has done wonders as a cricketer, as a wicket-keeper and as "Captain Cool". He is the only Indian cricketer to have three ICC trophies in his cabinet.
He won the T20I World Cup in 2007, the ODI World Cup in 2011, and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. As fans say, "MS Dhoni was the one who had the potential to change the game from behind the stumps." Whenever it comes to cricket, there would be hardly a person who won't know who MS Dhoni is. He always stood tall irrespective of the result of a game. He always inspired many. Even today, whenever India loses any mega event, people miss MS Dhoni as they believe the result would have been different had MS Dhoni been there with the team.
He was iconic. Maybe that's the reason why people love to wear jersey number 7. However, now any player won't be able to don jersey number 7, officially, as the BCCI has retired the Jersey Number 7. Three years after he left the nation in shock, announcing his retirement from international cricket, the Board has decided to ‘retire’ the number 7 sported by the World Cup-winning captain.
The only other cricketer who was given a similar honour is Sachin Tendulkar. In 2017, Sachin Tendulkar's No. 10 jersey too was folded away for good. It has been reported that the BCCI has informed the players in the national team, especially those making their debut, that they don’t have the option of numbers associated with Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni.
However, the BCCI’s decision somewhat limits the choices only for Indian players. As a rule, the ICC allows players to pick any number between 1 and 100.
It may be recalled that during the U-19 days, India's most promising young batsman, Shubman Gill, wanted his favourite No. 7 but it was already taken. Eventually, he settled down for No. 77 and continued with it even after graduating to the senior team. The current popular shirt numbers in India are Virat Kohli (18) and Rohit Sharma (45).
