Cricket fans, say goodbye to the boundary-bending 'bunny-hop'!
New Rule For Bummy Hop Catch in Cricket Latest News Today: In a dramatic update to cricket's laws, the MCC has pulled the plug on one of the sport’s flashiest tricks — the airborne boundary catch made while launching from outside the ropes.
Starting October 2026, fielders will no longer be able to jump from beyond the boundary, tap the ball in mid-air, and still be credited with a catch or save unless they fully land back inside the field of play. If not, it’s a boundary!
The announcement, made in coordination with the ICC, follows rising criticism over highlight-reel catches that defy cricket’s traditional sense of fairness. “If a player is outside the ropes, they shouldn’t be making a play on the ball unless they’re coming back in,” said an MCC official in comments quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
What’s Out?
The famous 'bunny-hop' catches, where a fielder jumps from beyond the boundary, taps the ball into play, and lands back outside without ever stepping inside, these are now banned.
What’s Still In?
Jaw-dropping efforts where a player taps the ball from inside the boundary, briefly steps out due to momentum, and dives back in to finish the catch, like Dewald Brevis’ IPL 2025 classic, are still legal.
One Shot, One Chance:
According to the new law, once a player has left the field and jumped to touch the ball mid-air, they only get one chance. After that, they must be grounded inside the field for the rest of the play. Any further contact with the ground outside the ropes, whether they touch the ball again or not, means it’s a boundary.
The rule will officially come into effect across all formats in October 2026, but don’t be surprised to see it pop up in playing conditions as early as next week.
This change is sure to divide fans, while some will miss the viral moments of athletic brilliance, others will welcome a more grounded and consistent standard for fielding. Either way, cricket's boundary rules just got a whole lot stricter!
