Global Happiness Rankings 2026: India Moves Up Two Spots, Finland Tops Again
India has climbed two spots in the World Happiness Report 2026, landing at 116th place among more than 140 countries. The annual report, released around International Day of Happiness on March 20, ranks nations based on well-being, economic factors, social support, and life expectancy.
Despite the modest rise, India continues to lag behind regional neighbors. Nepal ranks 99th, Pakistan 104th, while Afghanistan remains at the bottom at 147th. Other South Asian nations include Bangladesh at 127th and Sri Lanka at 134th.
The report highlights areas where India performs relatively well and where challenges remain. Corruption perception has improved to 64th place, while generosity stands at 78th. Citizens’ freedom of choice ranks 61st, healthy life expectancy 95th, and per capita GDP 89th. Social support in times of need remains a concern, with India placed 123rd.
Globally, Finland retains the top spot for the ninth consecutive year, followed by Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway among the happiest nations. China ranks 65th, Russia 79th, and the United States 23rd.
Experts note that while India shows gradual improvement, focused efforts on governance, health, social support, and economic equity are essential to move higher on the global happiness scale.
The report serves as a reminder that well-being is multidimensional, combining economic strength, social networks, and individual freedom, factors that governments must consider to improve citizens’ quality of life.
