A rising number of temporary residents in Canada are urging the government to extend their work permits and provide a fair opportunity to stay, as a large wave of visas approaches expiry alongside stricter immigration policies.

A video circulating online shows many affected individuals, including a significant number of Punjabis, expressing concern over the situation. The group includes international graduates, skilled workers and other temporary permit holders who say they are frustrated with how authorities are handling expiring permits.

Several of them argue that they have contributed to Canada’s economy and local communities through work and study and question why they must leave after spending years in the country.

Supporters say the matter impacts millions nationwide. Nearly 2.9 million temporary resident permits are set to expire during 2025 and 2026 across different categories, including work permits and post-graduation work authorisations.

At the same time, the Canadian government plans to reduce the share of temporary residents from about seven per cent to five per cent of the population by 2027, which is expected to narrow routes to permanent residency.

Immigration data suggests around 1.05 million temporary work permits expired in 2025, while another 9.27 lakh are due to expire in 2026. Many affected residents are seeking extensions, clearer immigration pathways and what they describe as fair treatment. Officials have acknowledged processing delays, but no broad extension plan has been announced.
