From Taxi Driver to State MP Candidate: The Rise of Ludhiana’s Sunny Singh in Australia
Baldev (Sunny) Singh, a native of Moti Nagar, Ludhiana, has been nominated by the Liberal Party to contest the upcoming state elections for the seat of Giles in South Australia. Singh’s journey from a 10+2 pass-out in Ludhiana to a political candidate in Australia is being seen as a major achievement for the Punjabi diaspora.
According to the report, Singh moved to Australia in 2008 on a study visa. His early journey was marked by hard work, including a stint as a taxi driver, before he eventually established his own taxi company.
He is currently serving as an elected councillor for the Port Augusta City Council. He has been a prominent figure in community service and multicultural representation. He is also a founding member of a local Gurdwara, reflecting his deep roots in his heritage.
As per the announcement, Singh’s official campaign for the Giles seat is set to launch on Wednesday, ahead of the South Australian state elections scheduled for March 21, 2026.
Singh said that his focus remains on representing the diverse voices of his constituency and building on his experience in local governance. The nomination marks a significant milestone, as he transitions from local council roles to seeking a seat in the State Parliament.
