Former Alberta MLA Peter Sandhu Joins Race for NRI Sabha Punjab Presidency
Parmjit Singh ‘Peter’ Sandhu, a two-time former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Alberta, Canada, has announced his intention to contest for the post of president for the NRI Sabha Punjab.
Sandhu has represented the Edmonton-Manning constituency twice and is currently in Punjab meeting with Sabha members to discuss his vision for the global organisation.
A 64-year-old native of Moga and nephew of the late Akali MP Gurcharan Singh Galib, Sandhu said that his return to his roots is driven by a desire for "sewa" (service).
He said during his Jalandhar visit that many people in the NRI community are dissatisfied with how their grievances are currently being handled.
He emphasised that the NRI Sabha serves as the only global bridge between the diaspora and the state government, and he aims to close existing gaps.
The presidency became vacant on January 5, 2026, following the tenure completion of Parvinder Kaur Banga’s two-year term.
According to official reports, Jalandhar Divisional Commissioner Ramvir Singh has already submitted a proposed election schedule to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the Sabha’s chief patron, for final approval.
"In addition to Sandhu, former president Jasvir S Gill is also reportedly eyeing the post, setting the stage for a competitive election."
