This marks her second consecutive win, with an impressive 62 percent of the votes.
The majority of local children attend 'Westlake Girls' High School' North Shore, making it a significant achievement for the Punjabi community. In a competitive race featuring four students vying for the board member position, Japan Kaur emerged victorious, earning the privilege of representing the school's students on the Board of Trustees.
Winning a second term as a school board member is a rare accomplishment, and Japan Kaur's success has also coincided with an increase in voter turnout. Her victory underscores her popularity and trust among the school's nearly 2,200 students.
Notably, Japan Kaur has been living as a Sikh and studying in New Zealand for the past year, making her a trailblazer as one of the first Sikh girls in the country to maintain her Sikh identity while pursuing her education. Currently in her 12th year of school, her achievement is a significant milestone for the Indian community and a source of pride for her family. Japan Kaur's father, Karamjit Singh Talwar, is a highly respected figure within the community and serves as the chief servitor of Gurdwara Sahib North Shore. He has also held the position of board trustee at 'Kedgley Intermediate School' Papatoetoe for three terms.
