Setback For Canada PM Justin Trudeau As Key Ally Jagmeet Singh Withdraws Support

Singh emphasized that the “real battle” now is to defeat the Conservatives.

Canada General Elections 2024 Latest News: In a significant blow to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Jagmeet Singh’s New Democratic Party (NDP) has withdrawn its support for his minority Liberal government, just a year before the upcoming general elections.

In a video shared on social media, Jagmeet Singh, leader of the NDP, criticized Trudeau's ability to effectively counter the opposition Conservatives. Recent polls suggest the Conservatives are likely to win easily in the next elections.

“Justin Trudeau has shown time and again that he caves to corporate greed. The Liberals have let Canadians down and do not deserve another chance,” Singh said in his message.

Singh emphasized that the “real battle” now is to defeat the Conservatives, accusing their leader, Pierre Poilievre, of favoring big corporations over ordinary Canadians. Singh warned that Poilievre’s policies would result in cuts to essential services like healthcare and pensions while benefiting large corporations and wealthy CEOs.

The withdrawal of support comes after an agreement made in 2022 between Singh’s NDP and Trudeau’s Liberals to support the minority government until October 2025. However, an NDP spokesperson revealed that discussions to end this agreement had been in progress for the past two weeks. Trudeau’s Liberal Party was reportedly caught off-guard by Singh’s sudden social media post announcing the split, which followed minutes after informing the party.

Singh made it clear that the NDP is prepared for an election and will consider voting against the government on every confidence measure moving forward.

In response, Trudeau said his government remains focused on addressing the affordability crisis and delivering vital services to Canadians. "These are the things we're focused on. I'll let others focus on politics," he said, expressing hope that elections wouldn’t take place until next fall so the government could continue working on programs like pharmacare, dental care, and school meal initiatives.

The sudden withdrawal of support signals a turbulent political landscape in Canada, with both parties now gearing up for the next elections.
