The strong competitor
of Justin Trudeau in 2019 elections in Canada, Jagmeet Singh got a huge
response on Monday when he won the NDP leadership. Singh is the first Sikh and
a non-white politician who will lead the country’s oldest and major political
party.
Jagmeet Singh received motivational messages on his twitter account and from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to UKs MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi and the entire Punjabi community congratulated Singh on his victory as NDP leader.
Singh is a great grandson of Sewa Singh Thikriwala. Sewa Singh was the prominent freedom fighter of Punjab and he was the president of Praja Manadal movement. Even Singh had spent some time in Patiala during his childhood.
Canadian premier Justin Trudeau tweeted, “Congratulations @theJagmeetSingh-I look forward to speaking soon and working together for Canadians.”
Member Parliament of UK, Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi congratulated Singh and he recalled the memorable meeting with him. Dhesi is the first turbaned Sikh MP in UK parliament.
A twitter user Said Ullah Khan termed Singh as a game changer. He wrote, “Jagmeet Singh rises as game changer in Canadian politics.”
Another twitter user Kaka Mohanwalia named Singh as a peoples’ person. Singh’s victory has cleared his way for the strong contender against Justin Trudeau in 2019 elections.
First time in the history of Canadian politics, a Sikh leader has won the hearts of people and became the leader of the country’s major political party NDP.
Now Singh is the biggest political rival of Trudeau and soon after getting elected with 53.6% of the vote on Sunday, Singh told the cheering crowd, "I am officially launching my campaign to be the next prime minster of Canada." The next federal election in Canada is set for October 2019.
Late on Sunday night, the member of provincial parliament (MPP) of Ontario hit the headlines again but for much bigger reasons. By polling 35,266 votes, Jagmeet registered an impressive victory over three other contenders running for party leadership — Northern Ontario MP Charlie Angus (12,075 votes), Manitoba MP Niki Ashton (11,374) and Quebec MP Guy Caron (6,164).
