‘Shorts’ shattered the dream of Canadian Grandmaster

Wearing shorts may lead you in troubles during the various international events as this happened to the Canadian Grandmaster Anton Kovalyov who faced trouble due his shorts in the Chess World Cup 2017. Kovalyov failed to turn up against his opponent Maxim Rodshtein of Israel at the Chess World Cup on Saturday. He had arrived at the venue wearing shorts.

But, the organisers did not approve his attire. He immediately left the venue and did not return. After 15 minutes, his opponent Maxim Rodshtein was given a walkover. Chief Arbiter Tomasz Deluga briefed the incident of shorts in the Chess World Cup championship.


Canadian Grandmaster was wearing his stripped shorts, the same one that he had worn while playing rounds one and two. He was asked by ECU President to dress appropriately in accordance with the dress code which was mentioned in the players' contract.

ECU President Zurab Azmaiparashvili noticed that Anton was dressed in shorts and asked him to adhere to the players' contract which mentions the point related to the dress code


European Chess Union president Zurab Azmaiparashvili told ChessBase India that he asked the Grandmaster to change as it did not meet the dress code of the World Cup.

Incidentally, Kovalyov had worn shorts while facing former world champion Viswanathan Anand in the second round.

Kovalyov dumped the Indian Grandmaster in the second round as he won one game and drew the other. Anand needed to reach the final of the World Cup to qualify for the Candidates tournament, the winner of which goes on to challenge the reigning champion - Magnus Carlsen.
