Jaishankar met Tarique Rahman, acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and eldest son of the late leader upon his arrival in Bangladesh’s capital. Jaishankar said in a post on X that he had handed over a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Rahman and conveyed deepest condolences on behalf of the government and people of India.

Khaleda Zia, who died on Tuesday at the age of 80 after a prolonged illness, served as Bangladesh’s first woman prime minister and was a prominent figure in the country’s politics, leading the BNP for decades. Global leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former rival Sheikh Hasina, also mourned her death and praised her contributions to Bangladesh’s development and democratic journey.

Modi paid tribute to her role in strengthening India-Bangladesh ties and recalled a “warm meeting” in Dhaka in 2015, adding that her vision and legacy would continue to guide the partnership between the two countries.
