Protest Erupts in Bangladesh over Minority Woman Raped by Local Politician latest news: The brutal rape of a woman from the Hindu community in Bangladesh's Cumilla district has triggered widespread protests across the country. The incident, which reportedly occurred on June 16, gained national attention after a video of the assault went viral, NDTV reported.
According to the report, students of Dhaka University led a massive protest on Sunday, demanding "direct action" against the perpetrators.
The 21-year-old survivor was allegedly raped by a local politician, Fazor Ali, at her parental home in Cumilla's Muradnagar sub-district, while she was visiting for the local Hindu festival Hari Seva, along with her children. Her husband, who works in Dubai, was away at the time.
The incident came to light only after the video surfaced on social media, showing the woman stripped, pleading, and brutally assaulted.
According to police, the prime accused, 36-year-old Fazor Ali, was arrested in a pre-dawn raid in Dhaka’s Sayedabad area. Four others were also arrested for sharing the video and revealing the victim’s identity on social media, which is a criminal offence.
Locals reportedly caught the accused immediately after the incident and beat him up. However, instead of handing him over to the police, they took him to a hospital, from where he later allegedly escaped.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Secretary-General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), condemned the incident and demanded exemplary punishment for all involved.
The Bangladesh High Court has since directed authorities to remove the viral video from all online platforms and ordered that the survivor be provided with adequate security and medical treatment.
