Musk said, “I think I’ve done enough,” adding that he would substantially cut his political spending.

Elon Musk leaves US Government as Special Employee latest news: SpaceX Founder & CEO Elon Musk, who has served as a Special U.S. Government Employee, is leaving his role in the government. His departure, according to reports, comes after he expressed disappointment in the government.

“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Donald Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending. The DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”

A White House official confirmed to news agency Associated Press that Elon Musk was stepping down.

“Elon Musk is leaving the administration, and his off-boarding will begin tonight,” the official said.

A report in The Guardian, drawing attention to the sudden shift, wrote, “The departure of a man who once appointed himself Trump’s ‘first buddy’ was quick and unceremonious.”

According to the report, the SpaceX founder did not have a formal conversation with President Trump before announcing his departure as a Special Government Employee. His 130-day mandate in the Trump administration was set to expire around May 30.

The report also noted that Musk had been signaling his departure from Washington and his commitment to returning to his business ventures all week.

Speaking about the U.S. federal bureaucracy, Musk told The Washington Post on Tuesday, “The federal bureaucracy situation is much worse than I realized. I thought there were problems, but it sure is an uphill battle trying to improve things in D.C., to say the least,” he said, adding that DOGE was blamed for anything that went wrong in the White House.

As per the report, citing The New York Times, Musk also expressed frustration to White House officials over the deal between Abu Dhabi and OpenAI, the Sam Altman-led rival to Musk’s own AI company.

There were protests in the U.S. over Musk’s political involvement, with many calling for him to leave his role as Trump’s adviser.

Musk had spent nearly $300 million to back Trump’s presidential campaign and other Republican candidates last year. According to the report, earlier this month, Musk said, “I think I’ve done enough,” adding that he would substantially cut his political spending.
