Law & Home Minister Orders Thorough Probe into Workplace Harassment & Discrimination Claims

The Singaporean authorities have launched an investigation into allegations of racial discrimination and workplace harassment made by a late Indian-origin police officer, Uvarja Gopal (36), who was found unconscious and later declared brought dead at the Yishun residential complex. In response to these serious allegations, Law and Home Minister K Shanmugam has instructed the police to thoroughly probe the matter.

Expressing his heartfelt condolences to Gopal's family, Minister Shanmugam took to Facebook on Friday evening to address the issue. He revealed that the officer had made a post on social media, claiming to have faced racial discrimination during his tenure in the Singapore Police Force (SPF). The minister stressed that the allegations were grave and needed to be thoroughly investigated.

"The officer had put up a post on social media in which he said, among other things, that he had faced racial discrimination in the Singapore Police Force (SPF). These and other allegations are serious," wrote Minister Shanmugam in his Facebook post.

According to the officer's post, he not only faced racial discrimination but also encountered a hostile work environment. While the original post has since been removed, it was reposted on Reddit, and several screenshots have circulated online, drawing attention to the issue.

In his social media post, the late officer also mentioned seeking help but not receiving any support. The specific details and circumstances surrounding the alleged incidents of racial discrimination and harassment at the workplace have yet to be disclosed.

As investigations into the officer's death continue, the authorities are providing support to his grieving family during this difficult time. Minister Shanmugam's directive to launch a comprehensive investigation reflects the Singaporean government's commitment to addressing issues of discrimination and promoting inclusivity within its institutions.
