Massive Gold Haul: Nepal Police Nabs Suspects Involved in 100 kg Gold Smuggling Through Tribhuvan International Airport

KATHMANDU: In a significant breakthrough, the Nepal Police have apprehended seven individuals, including an Indian and a Chinese national, for their alleged involvement in smuggling a staggering 100 kg of gold through Tribhuvan International Airport.

Late on Wednesday night, the Revenue Investigation Department, in conjunction with the Armed Police Force (APF), made a significant seizure of around 100 kg of gold that had been illicitly smuggled through the Customs Department at Tribhuvan International Airport.

The suspects were taken into custody, including taxi drivers Rajendra Roy, Ram Kumar Bhujel, Dilip Bhujel, Harka Raj Roy, and an Indian citizen identified as Thapten Tsering. Subsequently, a Chinese national named Lingchuan was also arrested in connection with the smuggling case.

Security personnel intercepted the covert operation, whereby the substantial amount of gold was being surreptitiously transported from the airport to Kathmandu city via taxi. The investigation is being carried out under the close supervision of the officials from the Inland Revenue Department.

As the authorities dig deeper into the matter, it has been reported that the customs department is gearing up to suspend the staff members responsible for inspecting and clearing such a large quantity of gold from the customs office at Tribhuvan International Airport on the fateful day. Despite the significant progress in the investigation, the identity of the gold's owner remains undisclosed, and further scrutiny is underway.

SSP, a senior official from the APF, affirmed that the ongoing investigation is being conducted meticulously to shed light on all aspects of this intricate gold smuggling operation. The collaboration between law enforcement agencies has been instrumental in successfully intercepting this massive smuggling attempt, which could have significantly impacted the nation's economic interests.
