The 43-year-old bystander, Ahmed al-Ahmed, was hailed as a hero for disarming one of the shooters during the deadly mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney. During the attack, Al-Ahmed was one of the first civilians to confront the gunmen when crowds were gathered for festive celebrations. Using parked cars for cover, he ran towards one of the shooters, wrestled the firearm away and knocked the assailant to the ground; this act is credited with saving many lives. Australian PM Anthony Albanese visited him in hospital earlier in the week and praised his courage, publicly acknowledging al-Ahmed as “the best of our country”.

Despite the life-saving act, al-Ahmed was severely wounded. According to his legal representative, he may lose the use of one arm after being struck multiple times by gunfire and having suffered significant blood loss, requiring intensive medical care and surgery. He is under close medical supervision as he recovers from his injuries.

Social media influencer Zachery Dereniowski presented this cheque to Bondi Beach Hero. He helped coordinate the global fundraising campaign. The donations represent broad international support, recognising al-Ahmed’s bravery and the risks he took to protect others. When handed the cheque, the injured hero asked softly, “I deserve it?”—to which Dereniowski replied firmly, “Every penny.”
