The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed in 1949 by the United States, Canada, and several Western European nations to provide collective security against the Soviet Union. As per the reports, after the destruction of the Second World War, the nations of Europe struggled a lot to rebuild their economies and ensure their security. The Western European countries were in a desperate need of collective security solution.

As a result, taking in view the increasing tensions and security concerns, representatives of several countries of Western Europe gathered together to create a military alliance. Great Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg signed the Brussels Treaty in March, 1948. Their treaty provided collective defense; if any one of these nations was attacked, the others were bound to help defend it.

NATO aims to promote democratic values and enables members to consult and cooperate on defence and security-related issues to solve problems, build trust among the countries. The organisation is committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes. If diplomatic efforts fail, it has the military power to undertake crisis-management operations.
