In Pakistan’s largest jailbreaks, more than 200 prisoners escaped froma jail in Karachi, Pakistan late on Monday after they were permitted to leave their cells following series of earthquake tremors, the Reuters reported citing local and police. At least one prisoner was killed in a shootout. So far, around 80 inmates have been recaptured.
According to the report, hundreds of prisoners were allowed into the jail’s courtyard after the tremors. Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar, the Provincial Law Minister, stated that the jailbreak was among the largest ever witnessed in the country. He added that panic ensued because of the earthquake, making it difficult to control a crowd of up to 1,000 people.
He said, the jailbreak began just before midnight on Monday and carried on till the early hours of Tuesday and that the prisoners snatched guns from prison staff, leading to shorts outs and then forced them to open the main gate.
The Report said that reporters at the site in Karachi witnessed broken glass and damaged electronic equipment inside the jail and room where prisoners see ther families was ransacked and Anxious family members gathered outside the jail on Tuesday.
The prison in the Malir district of Karachi, reportedly is situated in a poor residential and industrial neighbourhood.
Provincial Police Chief Ghulam Nabi Memon said most of the escaped prisoners were involved in minor crimes such as drug addiction.
