UK refused to return Udham Singh revolver that killed ‘Dwyer’

Chandigarh: The revolver of martyr Udham Singh that avenged ‘Jallianwala’ Bagh genocide may never returned to India. According to the information, the UK authorities had declined to return the belongings of the martyr to India.

An RTI activist Jatinder Jain filed an RTI to the concerned authorities seeking the revolver of martyr Udham Singh and the RTI reply by the Union Ministry of external affairs procured in September 16 stated that the UK government refused to return the belongings of martyr to India as they were part of the evidence. The UK authorities had intimated the Indian government through a letter sent in 2004.

The RTI information revealed that the belongings of martyr Udham Singh were in the possession of the UK Metropolitan Police.

Jain told Rozana Spokesman, "according to the communication received from the ministry of external affairs ‘Europe West Divison, the high commission of India in London shared the list of items to be in the custody of UK authorities and requested that the belongings could be returned to India.

He further said, “The UK authorities revealed that the items were in the possession of Police and were part of the evidence. So, the items can’t be returned to Indian government.”

The RTI applicant mentioned that the government of Punjab had written to the MEA in 2004, requesting that the return of articles of Udham Singh be taken up with the UK. But after the denial of UK authorities, no efforts made to bring back the martyr’s revolver.  

Bhagat Singh’s pistol had brought back to the Hussainiwala border museum in Ferozepur. People of the country paid tributes to the martyr on his 77th martyrdom day on Monday but the future generations would always miss to see the Revolver of martyr Udham Singh.

Singh targeted Michael O’Dwyer, the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab from 1912 to 1919, who supported General Dyer and called the massacre a “correct” action.

Martyr Udham Singh shot Michael O’Dwyer twice at the Caxton Hall, London, where the LG was scheduled to speak at the joint meeting of the East India Association and the Central Asian Society.
