Senators thank Amarinder government for increasing PU grant

Chandigarh: The Panjab University senators have hailed the much-needed financial dose to this ailing educational institution given by the Punjab government ion its annual budget for 2017-18 announced on Tuesday.

The group of Senators from Panjab University Chandigarh, who had met Punjab Education Minister earlier to request for increase in grant to Panjab University Chandigarh, have welcomed the Punjab budget proposal for 2017-18, to increase the grant to the PU, Chandigarh fixing it at Rs 33 crore per annum from just Rs 20 crore earlier.

This inadequate grant was not even being paid,they noted. Senators who met Education minister earlier, included Prof. Pam Rajput, Dr. Rabindernath Sharma, Prof. Chaman Lal, Principal BC Josan, Dr. Ameer Sultana and Dr. Amit Joshi.

Thanking Amarinder government, the Senators further appealed to bring it to the level of 40 percent of its total annual budget, which was agreed upon at the time of splitting Panjab University between Central and State governments.

At the same time, they appealed to Punjab Chief minister Amarinder Singh, Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal and Education Minister Aruna Chaudhary to take more active interest in the affairs of the PU which is a heritage University from Lahore since its set up in 1882.
