Balachaur: Along with English, Punjabi would also be the medium of instruction in Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and polytechnics in Punjab from the coming academic session, state Technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi said here today.

On the occasion of a 'Rozgar Mela' at a private institute here, he said the step would be a contribution to the development of mother-tongue Punjabi.

The move was also being initiated in order to make the teaching-learning experience in these technical institutions a smoother affair for the students who generally studied till class X in Punjabi medium only, he said.

English language teachers were being appointed in technical institutions in order to ensure the proficiency of students, the minister added.

Channi said that while 27,500 youths were provided jobs during the first such mega job fest last year, nearly 50,000 are expected to be given jobs by nearly 1,700 companies during the ongoing second round.

Such fairs would be organised at around 50 places during the current placement drive, he said. PTI
