The court also directed the two states to ensure that no agitation take place on the issue. Haryana has been witnessing protests over the SYL issue with main opposition INDL blocking roads and holding demonstrations. "Authorities of both the states (Punjab and Haryana) must remember that decree passed by this court has to be respected and has to be executed," a three-judge bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra said. During the hearing Attorney General K K Venugopal told the bench, also comprising Justices Amitava Roy and A M Khanwilkar, that the Centre was doing its best to bring both these states to a reconciliatory stage so that decree can be amicably executed. Venugopal told the bench that the Union Minister for Water Resources has conducted a number of meetings with competent authorities of both these states and the Central government was hopeful that there would be a settlement between Punjab and Haryana on the SYL issue.

After SC decree on SYL, Haryana CM appeals to Capt for cooperation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called a meeting of chief ministers of Punjab and Haryana in an attempt to arrive at an amicable solution to the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal issue, the Supreme Court was informed on Tuesday.
After the SC decree on the issue, Haryana CM ML Khattar appealed to Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh to cooperate on the issue. During hearing of the case, senior counsel AK Ganguly told a three-judge Bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra on behalf of Punjab that the Prime Minister had called a meeting of the two chief ministers.
SYL issue can be resolved only through negotiations: Amarinder
Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today asserted that the contentious Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) issue could be resolved only through negotiations and urged the Centre to facilitate dialogue with Haryana for early resolution of the matter. His comments came on a day when the Supreme Court said the orders passed by it on the Satluj-Yamuna Link canal issue have to be "respected and executed" and the governments of Punjab and Haryana have a duty to obey them. The court has fixed the matter for hearing on September 7. In a statement, the chief minister said that Punjab does not wish to deprive anyone of the essential commodity. "The critical shortage of water in the state prevented it from sharing this vital resource."
Phoolka resigns as leader of opposition
Chandigarh: AAP MLA and leader of opposition HS Phoolka submitted his resigned to Speaker Punjab Vidhan Sabha. Meanwhile, Phoolka has recommended three names in his replacement including Kanwar Sandhu, Sukhpal Singh Khaira and Aman Arora. The party has to take the final call for finalising the leader of opposition. However, Deputy party leader will hold the meetings till the AAP would not decide the name of another MLA.
