Local Government Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu said that the university would be a tribute to the martyrdom of the ‘Vadde Sahibzaade’. The 'Vadde Sahibzaade' of 10th Guru Gobind Singh, Baba Ajit Singh, was born at Paunta Sahib, and Baba Jujhar Singh, the second son, was born at Anandpur Sahib. The two were 18 and 16-year-old respectively when they achieved martyrdom at Chamkaur Sahib.

The minister said that during the budget session of the state assembly, Technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had demanded a university at Chamkaur Sahib for professional education. The demand was accepted on the spot by Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, who has announced the establishment of a university at Chamkaur Sahib, he added.
