In another initiative, the Chief Minister has given the go-ahead for the development of the chowk from Adalat Bazar to the historic Qila Mubarak as a heritage corridor.

The state government has also initiated two pilot projects in the city for the establishment of underground bins, at Modi Plaza and behind Mandir Shri Kali Mata, besides identifying 20 more locations for the next phase, at a total cost of Rs. 2.6 crore.

Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, who represents Patiala in the state assembly, has approved three channelization projects to improve the area’s drainage system. These are located at Patiala Chhoti Nadi, Jacobs Drain and Model Town Drain, according to a government spokesperson.

The government plans to go in for chain link fencing of Bir Khule Majra and Bir Majal under RKVY & Campa to check the menace of stray cattle, said the spokesperson, adding that steps were also being taken to shift the dairies outside the city limits to declog the sewers and check the resultant water-logging.

Besides setting up a new fish mandi, the government also plans to develop a nature park and nursery and Campa & Green Mission Punjab. Another Rs. 1 crore has been set aside for development of parks in the city.

A multi-storyed parking lot is also on the anvil, along with replacement of street lights with the energy-saving LED lights across the city. It is also proposed to develop 52 model anganwaadis in the area, besides launch of Avsar Project – a bridge school for slum children.

Being the home town of Captain Amarinder, Patiala had been subjected to extreme apathy under the previous regime, with all development work at a standstill for the past several years. Through these initiatives, the incumbent government in the state is striving to bring the region’s development back on track, the spokesperson added.
