Munish Nagar:
People often consider old age as a problem but meet the three Sikhs who have changed the verdict of their lives despite their old age. They have not only gained the fame but they have set the extra ordinary examples for the youngsters.
FAUJA SINGH, 106 YEAR OLD MARATHAN RUNNER
Fauja Singh was born in Beas, Jalandhar on April 1, 1911. Interestingly, he did not develop the ability to walk until he was five year old. He had a passion for running but he didn’t continue after the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947.
The death of his wife, daughter and fifth son infused spirit to his passion and he started focusing on running. He started running at the age of 89 years and participated in international marathon events. He has set a number of world records.
In 2012, Fauja Singh carried the Olympic torch. In October 2016, Singh became the first 100 year old to finish a marathon. He has awarded the British Empire Medal in 2015 for services to sport and charity.
He always participates in the charity runs and he is the inspiration for the youngsters. Once he said,
"The moment I fell in love with running, I started forgetting my grief and traumas."
DALBIR SINGH DEOL, 91 YEAR OLD RUNNER
Dalbir Singh Deol, 91 year old British Sikh had won the gold medal in the 100, 200 and 400 meters race in the Men’s age group 90-94 at the European Master’s Athletic Championship in Denmark.
Dalbir Singh Deol,
“I have actually gotten more than I was worthy of.” He was turned down by the army thrice but he did not leave his passion of running."
He won Gold medal in the three different races. The 400m finals were pure joy to watch. First off were the 90-94 year old athletes, a remarkable field of 4. And Great Britain’s Dalbir SIngh Deol, 91, hot off the blocks, true to his pre-race strategy, came through as new European Champion in 1:58.22.
Dalbir Singh Deol has been active member of the UK Sikh community for many decades, having involvement in Gurudwaras and some of the earlier Sikh organisations.
