There is a saying, 'Where there is a will, there is a way" and Dalwinder Singh, a marginal farmer proved it with his hard work and dedication. He is a torchbearer of diversified farming in Punjab who has only two acres of land. He used to sow the traditional crops in his land, and the crop was not sufficient to feed his family. In 2008, he changed his mind set and tried his luck in Pig farming with few pigs.
A matric passed Dalwinder never looked back since 2008, and now he is a successful farmer who is the source of inspiration for the small farmer community. He started Pig farming on a small portion of one Kanal, and one can be astonished as his annual turnover is Rs 30 lakhs.
Singh said, "The traditional farming is not beneficial for a small farmer, and that's why we need to change ourselves according to the latest practices in the farming sector. I am running the pig breeding farm since 2008, and now my annual turnover from just one kanal is equal to the annual turnover which comes from 42 acres of land."
Singh is famous in the entire state for his excellent model of diversified farming, and even he is also helping the small farmers who came to Sikh for their new startup. He trains them properly and helps them in starting their venture.
When asked him about the agrarian society's acceptance for pig farming, he said, "I never bothered about what people would say if I start the pig farming. We have to bring the change in the mindset of small farmers who didn't dare to put even a single step for the diversified farming. The future of small farming lies in the diversified farming whether it is pig farming, fish farming and other agriculture practices."
With the 25 female pigs and two make pigs that can be kept in just one Kanal of the land. A female pig delivered 12 piglets twice in a year, and if a farmer rears 400 piglets in a year, he can earn around Rs 30 lakhs a year.
However, the pig farming is not easy as the farmer has to be careful while bringing up the pigs. The pig farm should be equipped with bio security and pigs should be properly checked by a doctor time to time. Even the Punjab government is also helping the pig farmers with subsidy scheme, and pig feed is exempted from VAT in the state.
The majority of the farmers fear of the fact regarding the lack of market for pigs, but it's not a big challenge as the consumption of pigs are much more than the production. Dalwinder said that the people come to him and the piglets easily sold out, and the contractors from North-East comes to him for buying the bulk of piglets. He said that the number of piglets they demand is very much higher than the production.
Dalwinder said, "The contractors ask for thousands of pigs which we cannot give them as we produce only 400 piglets. The piggery industry demands more pigs annually, and it's not easy to produce the pigs as per the industry's demand. So, there is no problem of marketing." Singh with his dedication and vision has won the accolades for setting up an example in diversified farming.
