Jalandhar; Coming in support of prisoners of war (PoWs), Dalbir Kaur, sister of Sarabjit Singh who was killed in a Pakistan jail in 2013, has appealed to the Union Government to intervene to secure the release of Army men who had been languishing in Pakistani jails since 1965 and 1971.

Dalbir Kaur, who had joined the BJP last year, said she had already met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and pressed her for talks with Pakistan for the release of about 214 PoWs from Punjab. She was accompanied by six families of PoWs from Malwa region.

Arshinder Pal Singh, son of Dharampal Singh of Lehra Dhurkot village in Bathinda, said his father had fought for the 1971 war as part of the 4 Sikh Regiment. “My father was declared a martyr. We even have his statue at our village. But much later we learnt through a soldier, Satish Kumar of Ferozepur, that my father is alive. Since then we have been meeting prisoners released from Kila Attock Jail. All have confirmed my father’s presence there,” he said holding his father’s picture in Army uniform.

Other families too had a similar tale to tell. They demanded immediate intervention of the Centre to secure their kin’s release.
