Chandigarh: Punjab BJP chief Shwait Malik
today hit out at the state government, saying it made "unachievable promises" to the people.
During a "meet-the-press" programme here, Malik alleged development has come to a standstill in Punjab under the Congress rule.
"Congress befooled people. They made unachievable
promises to every section including the farmers and youth, but
now the people are fed up with them as the government has been
unable to deliver on the promises it made," Malik said.
The BJP leader also said the Congress government
was making "useless excuses by saying coffers are empty".
"Compare any year of Badal Sahab's government versus
Amarinder's first year rule, you will get the answer,"
Malik said, adding "we are asking the Congress to either
perform or quit".
Malik also claimed that Punjab Congress president Sunil
Jakhar was not accessible to people in Gurdaspur, the Lok
Sabha seat he had won after BJP leader Vinod Khanna's demise last
year.
"Mr Jakhar is not accessible to his constituents, he is
nowhere to be seen. I am also a MP, I have worked in Amritsar
earlier also, I am visible there, I am accessible, but where is Jakhar," he said.
Replying to a question, he ruled out any possibility that the SAD
and the BJP will ever part ways.
"This alliance will fight the next Lok Sabha election and
win all the 13 seats (from Punjab)," he said.
On the contentious SYL issue, Malik said, "I am a Punjabi,
I will talk in Punjab's favour. Do we have any surplus water to share with
others? The fact is that Punjab cannot spare even a drop of
water for others."
To another question, Malik said the Modi government is
committed to uplift the poor and needy.
On recent Phagwara clash
incident, Malik said it was the result of "political conspiracy" hatched
to "incite caste based clashes" and sought formation of a Special
Investigation Team to probe the matter.
Six days after the
Phagawra clash incident in which four persons sustained injuries and
caused tension in the area, a delegation of BJP led by Malik had
yesterday met Punjab Governor V P Singh Badnore and sought constitution
of a SIT to "identify conspirators and inciters" of the clash.
