Chandigarh Press Club to protest against threats, killing of journalists tomorrow

Chandigarh Press Club is organizing a protest under aegis of Federation of Press Clubs of India on October 2. The Club’s Secretary General Barinder Rawat informed that protest would be held on this day on the premises of Chandigarh Press Club, Sector 27, Chandigarh.

The protest marks 'SOLIDARITY DAY' being observed nationwide by press clubs across the country on October 2. Gauri Lankesh, an independent publisher and Editor of a Kannada publication, was killed in cold blood on September 5, in her house. Till today the police have not been able to make any arrests.

In Tripura, on September 21, a television reporter Shantanu Bhowmick was brutally killed in broad daylight while covering a protest rally. A day later K J Singh, a senior journalist, who was also member of the Chandigarh Press Club, was murdered at his home along with his mother in Mohali, Punjab.

These are three gruesome murders in just one month. In the last one month alone nearly 100 journalists have been threatened for expressing free opinion. Many journalists in the country have been getting regular death threats.
