Amritsar, November 30, 2024: Automobile dealers across Punjab are preparing to launch an indefinite strike starting December 9, citing grievances over the Punjab government’s recent decision to block over 400 Vehicle ID portals without prior notice. This marks the second such instance in recent months, causing significant disruption for automobile dealers and customers alike.
The Vehicle ID portals, essential for registering new vehicles via the VAHAN e-portal system, have been non-functional for over 20 days. VAHAN, a centralized government platform, facilitates vehicle registration nationwide.
Dealers Push Back Against ‘Government Bullying’
Rajiv Chopra, Chairman of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), condemned the government’s actions, calling them unjust and arbitrary. "This move by the Punjab government is causing unnecessary inconvenience to customers and tarnishing the reputation of dealerships and associated brands. If such practices persist, we may be forced to surrender registration rights altogether," Chopra stated.
Impact on Customers and Revenue
Chopra emphasized the challenges customers face due to the blocked portals. Buyers are now compelled to purchase vehicles from neighboring states, including Chandigarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Rajasthan. This shift not only inconveniences consumers but also leads to substantial revenue losses for Punjab, particularly in GST collections.
"Punjab already charges the highest security fees for four-wheelers in the country," Chopra added. "Blocking Vehicle ID portals without warning only exacerbates the situation, harming both customers and dealerships."
Dealerships Demand Resolution
FADA has issued an ultimatum to the Punjab government, urging resolution within 72 hours. As a first step, dealerships across the state will observe a token strike on December 2, 2024. If the issue remains unresolved, they plan to escalate to an indefinite strike starting December 9.
Public Concerns and Way Forward
Dealers have expressed concern about the public nuisance created by this issue. Customers now face delays in vehicle registrations, forcing them to approach the District Transport Offices (DTOs) or Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) directly.
"We remain committed to resolving this issue amicably but will stand united against any further government bullying," Chopra stated.
The Punjab government is yet to respond to the demands, but with a strike looming, swift action will be crucial to avoid prolonged disruptions in the state's automobile sector.
