Punjab News: Six-Year-Old from Ropar Scales Mount Elbrus Latest news updates: Ropar, Punjab: A six-year-old boy from Punjab’s Ropar has made history by scaling Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe, located in Russia, at an altitude of 18,510 feet (5,642 metres). The achievement was reported by Hindustan Times, citing his family members.
The Class 2 student, Teghbir Singh, began his trek to Mount Elbrus on June 20 and successfully reached the summit on June 28, where the normal temperature reportedly stays around -10 degrees Celsius.
Teghbir received a certificate from the Mountaineering, Rock Climbing and Sports Tourism Federation of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (Russia). The certificate stated:
“It is to certify that Teghbir Singh from India is the world’s youngest summiteer on Mount Elbrus at the age of 6 years, 9 months, and 4 days.”
With this achievement, Teghbir broke the previous world record held by Wagah Kushagra from Maharashtra, who scaled the same peak last year at the age of 7 years and 3 months, according to his family.
“I was walking on snow for the first time. My shoes were heavy, but I had practiced wearing them earlier,” Teghbir said after completing the climb.
The little boy had been trained to deal with high-altitude sickness by his coach.
His father, Sukhinderdeep Singh, is quoted as saying, “Teghbir started preparing almost a year ago. He was trained by Bikramjit Singh Ghuman (a retired coach), who helped him with exercises aimed at improving cardiovascular health and lung capacity to handle altitude sickness. He used to go on weekly treks with me and the coach to various hilly locations.”
Sukhinderdeep Singh, who accompanied his son on the expedition, added, “This was the first time Teghbir walked on snow wearing heavy boots, crampons, a harness, and oxygen support. All the equipment increased the weight on his feet by almost 3 to 4 kilograms. He walked and stayed at a high-altitude location with low oxygen levels and sub-zero temperatures for nearly a week.”
Sukhinderdeep, who works as an administrator at a hospital in Ropar, reiterated that Teghbir endured extreme conditions for several days.
Teghbir’s mother, Dr. Manpreet Kaur, a gynaecologist, told HT that her son followed a strict diet plan designed by his coach, which played a key role in helping him complete the high-altitude trek successfully .
