Jalandhar MP Channi emphasized that numerous studies conducted by institutions
New Delhi: During a Lok Sabha session, Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Raj Bhushan Chaudhary, confirmed that the government does not have data on deaths caused by the consumption of contaminated groundwater. In response to a query from Member of Parliament Charanjit Singh Channi, MoS Chaudhary stated, "According to information from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, there is no specific data available on fatalities due to groundwater pollution in the state."
Notably, Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi emphasized that numerous studies conducted by institutions such as Panjab University and Guru Nanak Dev University have documented the extent of groundwater pollution and its adverse health effects. He explained that his request for data aims to highlight the severity of the issue and to press for an urgent action plan from the government.
MoS Bhushan Chaudhary noted that since water management falls under state jurisdiction, the sustainable development and quality management of groundwater resources are primarily the responsibility of state governments.
Former CM Channi argued that while water management is indeed a state responsibility, the central government should not ignore the critical nature of the problem and must take appropriate actions to address it.
