Punjab Pollution Report: Chandigarh Records Highest Stubble Burning Cases in Punjab

Punjab Pollution Report Latest News: Punjab is grappling with escalating pollution concerns, with Ludhiana and Rupnagar emerging as the most polluted cities in the state. Chandigarh, on the other hand, is dealing with a surge in stubble burning incidents, with 589 cases reported in Bathinda on Thursday, marking the highest count for this season.

Although this year has witnessed a 50 percent reduction in stubble burning cases in Punjab post-paddy harvesting, air quality has begun to deteriorate in the region. As is often the case, the winter season exacerbates the issue of air pollution. The real-time air quality index (AQI) currently stands at 93 (Poor), with fluctuations observed in the last 24 hours.

Indoor air quality in Punjab is becoming a growing concern, as pollutants infiltrate homes and buildings through doors, windows, and ventilation systems. Residents are advised to use air purifiers or fresh air machines indoors and keep doors and windows closed when outdoor AQI levels are high. Proper ventilation is recommended only when outdoor air quality is improving and falls within the moderate AQI range.

The primary causes of outdoor air pollution in Punjab include aerosols, gas emissions from vehicles, industrial activities, factory emissions, stubble burning, fossil fuels, and forest fires. Meanwhile, indoor air pollution is attributed to harmful gases released during cooking using fuels such as wood, crop residues, charcoal, coal, and dung, as well as mold fumes and chemicals from cleaning materials.

To combat these challenges, wearing N95 masks is advised when going outside until AQI levels improve to the moderate range. Additionally, commuters are encouraged to use public transport or carpool to reduce emissions. The situation serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need for sustainable solutions to alleviate Punjab's air pollution crisis.
