Boost for Ludhiana Industry: Halwara Airport Set for PM Modi’s Virtual Inauguration
After years of delay and missing many deadlines, the Halwara Airport in Ludhiana is finally set for a virtual inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 1, 2026. Government officials in Chandigarh confirmed the development on Wednesday, noting that the Prime Minister will dedicate the long-awaited project to the public via video conferencing.
In response to the announcement, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has convened an important review meeting in Chandigarh this Thursday. The session aims to oversee final preparations and ensure the smooth functioning of this high-profile event.
This inauguration is particularly significant, as it marks a rare instance of a terminal being officially opened ahead of its operational launch; Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain previously said that flight operations are expected to begin in March 2026.
The project, initially slated for a 2022 opening, faced persistent hurdles, including funding issues from GLADA in early 2022, followed by pending runway work by the Indian Air Force and security clearances. A virtual inauguration scheduled for July 2025 was also deferred.
Industrialists, including Badish Jindal, president of the World MSME Forum, appreciated the move, and the industry has long awaited this convenience to reduce travel time.
