In a move carrying significant social and political weight, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Dera Sachkhand Ballan in Jalandhar this Sunday, February 1. The visit, confirmed by Union MoS Ravneet Singh Bittu on Tuesday, coincides with the celebrations of Guru Ravidass Jayanti.

According to the report, while the Prime Minister generally visits Seer Govardhan in Varanasi, the birthplace of Guru Ravidass, on this day, the decision to visit Dera Ballan is seen as a strategic outreach. The move is expected to have a significant impact on Punjab’s 34 per cent Dalit community.

The Union Government has conferred the Padma Shri upon Sant Niranjan Dass, the head of Dera Sachkhand Ballan, for his spiritual and social service on this Republic Day. This marks a notable shift in engagement, as the Dera leadership had previously met the PM in New Delhi to discuss major issues. 

Analysts suggest the PM’s presence at the Dera could have major political implications for the state’s electoral landscape.
